Important Stuff

For each game, bring:

(*) It costs $60 per team per match. We put 10 people on a team, so theoretically we should end up with $40 too much each game. If you bring $6 as exact change then that is fine, but otherwise we find it easiest to take a bit more and then later in the season refuse to take your money, so it ends up being about $6 each. I use a stochastic approach to this, so it is possible that you will pay slightly more or less than $6 per game, but the overhead of real book-keeping is too much for me. If you don't trust the system then either volunteer as the treasurer, or just bring $6 as exact change, or pay $6*7~=$42 upfront.

Try to arrive 15min before the game starts so we can sort out payment, the team and hit a ball around. Sometimes traffic gets really bad too, so the extra time can be useful there.

Please let either Ian (0401 539 538) or Andy (0421 788 492) know if you can't make it to a game. If we don't have enough people, then it can end up costing us lots of money.

Transport

By Train

Map of BurwoodGet off the train at Burwood station. Walk out and turn right. Walk down Burwood road until you get to Parramatta Rd. Cross it (you will be next to a store that sells giant teddy bears... they are quite enourmous). Go down Parramatta Rd (to the right) until you get to the hockey ground. It is just after a big football field. Walk through the gap in the fence, and over the hill (you probably won't see the field from the street).

Don't be tempted to catch the 400 bus from UNSW. Sure it says "Burwood" and "Limited Stops", but it is evil.

By Car

We try to carpool on the way there to maximise fun and minimise cost. Let me know if you want to travel by car, and if so, whether you have a car, and how many seats it has.

To drive there, go down Ryde road, take a left at Concorde Rd and follow it for a while (there is a speed camera there somewhere). At the top of a hill (a fair way on) is a green sign telling you that if you turn left you get to various places (I think "Five Dock" is one of them). Go left here and follow this road (Gipps St). Some way down the road, there is an arrow on the road, indicating that you can turn right or go straight ahead. You want to turn right here, and park in the carpark on your left (it is just some grass).

The Teams

We have two teams. They are flexible, but I've put people on teams just so we have something concrete, even if it sucks. So, if you want to switch teams, then let me know. Also, it is highly likely that we will do one-off team swaps on the night (or a person doubling up).

Rules

If you are a person who likes to know the rules for the game, then read this. It is entirely optional. Since there will be people who have played hockey before, and people who haven't, each group gets their own description. Hopefully they will be consistent.

Never Played Before

The idea of the game is to get the ball into the other teams goal.

You are allowed to touch the ball with the flat side of your stick (don't worry if you don't have a stick, you can borrow one). Anything else is a free hit to the other team, even if it was unintentional (the ball will hit your foot lots probably).

We have 7 people on the field all the time, up to 5 of them will be male. One person will be the 'Kicking Back', who is allowed to kick the ball when they are in our half of the field. They will be more like a goalie, but they don't wear extra padding or anything.

If the ball goes out, it is a free hit to the team that didn't hit it out. Usually this is from the spot where the ball goes out, though if it goes out over the end lines, it is similar to hockey, with a corner or a goal hit. Note that a corner in hockey isn't actually taken from the corner, it is taken 5m up the field from the corner, which makes it a little bit easier.

When a team has a free hit, the other team isn't allowed within 5m of the person hitting it, until they have hit it. The person taking the hit must pass the ball to someone (once they hit it, they can't touch it until someone else has). When taking a free hit, we should always have someone really close to pass to (even if we don't actually pass to them), otherwise taking a free hit is too stressful. You can't score a goal off a free hit, and the pass must be further than 1m (so you can't just touch the ball and have someone else have a shot at goal - it must go 1m).

Although I've been saying 'hit', you aren't actually allowed to hit the ball in this version of hockey. You 'push' the ball. I don't quite know how to describe it in words, but it just means that the ball doesn't go as fast.

The ball isn't allowed to go above knee height.

Played Before

The game is played on a half field.

It is 7 a side, with at most 5 males on the field.

No hitting, only pushing (sometimes slap hitting seems to be allowed, but I wouldn't try it on a goal, and I would avoid it unless you are female).

Ball isn't allowed to go above knee height.

No goalies, but each team has a kicking back (can kick the ball in their half).

No short corners, no 'D' - you can score from anywhere in the other team's half.
